A to Z Challenge: X-mas

This post is part of the April A-Z Blogging Challenge. This year my theme is simply, "things I know." Some posts will be informational, some about life lessons, some about things I've learned as an author/blogger.

A mini-rant for you, because it's the end of A-Z, and I'm kind of tired, and this is something that really bothers me.

X-mas is a perfectly ok abbreviation for Christmas.
When I use it, it's not in an effort to take Christ out of Christmas, or to impose some atheist/secular beliefs on others (you have to have them to impose them on others), or to participate in the "War on Christmas." It's mostly because I'm lazy. But also, this qualifies in my 'things I know' category because actually, Xmas started as an abbreviation used BY Christians. The X represents the Greek letter chi, which is the first part of Christ's name when written in Greek. So, ha. In the game of semantics, I win.

I could say that that's why I use it, but really, really people, it's because I'm lazy. And I think that's why most people do it. So please let's stop arguing about it! The effort to explain this negates the energy I saved by being lazy and not typing out the whole beginning of the word in the first place.

So there's my mini-rant. I'll come up with something nicer for Y tomorrow :)

What are you feeling rant'y about?

  1. You said it, Ayjay! Agreed. X-Mas is a fine abbreviation for Christmas and yes I confess that I've often used it when I was being lazy. But I'd scoff at anyone who would have the audacity to tell me that I'm waging war on the holiday, or improperly referencing the name.

As someone who has taken longer than the rest of the world to update to smartphones, my phone has long required me to press the keypad several times if I wanted to use one of the three letters on each numerical button, to send a text message. I'll be damned if I spend 10 minutes or longer (I'm a slow phone texter, which makes matters even worse) trying to type out C-h-r-i-s-t-m-a-s when a simple Xmas abbreviation will suffice.

Honestly, I guess I'm feeling ranty about being a woman. Sometimes I think men have it easier. Womanhood is VERY inconvenient sometimes. No, scratch that...most of the time. It just requires way to much extra maintenance steps when I just want to get on with my day, and my life, already. Enough said.

  2. I'd say the 'X' letter is a good one to have a rant over. I'm probably going to have one over 'Z'.

Ugh... the "War On Christmas". I could get all ranty about that. But I wont. I agree that Xmas is perfectly acceptable, but had no idea why. Semantics ftw! :)

I liked your mini-rant and your use of X. Can't wait to see what you've got for Y.

  4. X was tough for almost everyone with a theme on this challenge. Or without. Waiting for your 'Y' post! :)

  5. Hmm. I've also heard it explained that "X looks like a cross."
